“In 1999, I became the hospital’s seventh CEO in five years. We needed an infusion of both capital and confidence. When I took the position, I made it clear that I planned to be around for a long time. I was committed to turning around the organization financially, strategically and culturally. I looked to ONFocus | Healthcare for help as I wanted people familiar with every aspect of a turnaround, from leadership development to culture change to strategic planning to team building. For the next two to three years, ONFocus | Healthcare became an integral part of our team of 1200 staff to help us focus on operations, accountability, leadership and consensus building. We created a strategic plan that didn’t sit on a shelf; we accomplished everything we set out to do, which goes back to discipline, processes, focus and accountability. Our work was reflected in our patient satisfaction scores, which went from 70 to the high 80s; employees were feeling and giving more respect, and our financials began trending up. In early 2000, we conducted our first employee satisfaction survey. The results were not good, our employees were not happy. They did not feel their opinions mattered; they felt their pay was not market based and moral was very low. The RN vacancy rate was soaring and agency utilization was ramped. In the spring of 2004, we conducted another employee opinion survey and our results have improved. Over 90% of our colleagues completed the survey, and we scored high in several areas. Respect, pay, staffing and morale were all areas that improvement was noted. Our RN vacancy rate for 2004 was under 6%! This was a journey where clarification was critical.
